Lakers Baseball off to a fast start

The Lakeland Lakers traveled to Millington, TN this past weekend to take on some strong competition. They played the NJCAA seventh ranked DII Parkland Cobras, DII Highland (IL), and Division I opponents Rend Lake and Lake Land. The Lakers finished the weekend with an impressive 3-1 record.

In their first game against Parkland, Levi Jones and Adam Samuels led the 13 hit attack as they each collected 3 hits in the 13-11 win. Spencer Schultz also collected 2 hits and added 3 RBI's. In this game, the Cobra's took the lead in the bottom of the eighth 11-9, setting up the decisive ninth when the Lakers plated 4 runs. In the ninth, the Lakers collected singles from Jones, Samuels, Matt Didonato, Cody Pittenger, Garrett Sierra, and then Schultz to give the Lakers the lead.

Rob Kalinowski (1-0) picked up the first win of the year for the Lakers pitching 3 innings, allowing 3 runs and striking out 2. Levi Jones came in to close in the ninth as he earned his first college save at Lakeland.

The second game of the double header proved much tougher for the Lakers as they lost to D I Lake Land (IL) 10-2. Hudson Widrig (0-1) threw 5 innings and gave up 4 runs (2 earned) while striking out 5 in the loss. David Kalinowski also pitched 3.1 innings and allowed 2 earned runs. Despite scoring only two runs, the Lakers collected 11 hits on the day. They were paced by two hits each from Cody Pittenger, Alex Medina and Jack Shepard. Pittenger and Spencer Schultz added run scoring doubles.
