Lakers Baseball season ends in sub-District championship

The Lakers season came to an end Friday night as Lakeland lost a difficult 5-4 game to host Cuyahoga Community College. Earlier in the day, the Lakers had beaten Edison State 7-4 and Cuyahoga had defeated Vincennes University 6-0 to set up the championship game. In this game, the Lakers started quickly as Cody Pittenger started the game off with a walk. After a Garrett Sierra sac bunt, Spencer Schultz put runners at the corners with a single.  Adam Samuels and Alex Medina later followed with consecutive RBI singles to give the Lakers a 2-0 lead after one. The Lakers increased their lead to 3-0 in the third inning as a lead-off Sierra single was followed by an RBI double from Schultz.

Cuyahoga cut the lead to one as they scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. This was followed by a tying run in the bottom of the sixth that was scored on a wild pitch.  From there, the game would get interesting as it was knotted at three after six innings.  After a scoreless seventh and top half of the eighth, the Challengers third baseman Colin Minor would lead off the bottom of the eighth inning with a home run to give Cuyahoga a 4-3 lead. In the top of the ninth inning, Brandon Harlan would pinch hit and start the inning with a single. Pinch hitter Dillon Rohm would then draw a walk. A pitch in the dirt that got away from the catcher led to Harlan trying to get to third base.  The Cuyahoga catcher was able to get the ball and make a rush throw to try and get Harlan at third base. From the rush, came an errant throw which sailed into left field allowing Harlan to score the tying run. In the bottom of the ninth, the Challengers would answer. After a strikeout, Sami Mehmed would double. Matt Starkovic was then intentionally walked and that was followed by a Garett Robberts walk. Minor would then hit a ground ball to short which left little time to make a play at the plate. Mehmed would break on contact and score the winning run as the throw was off target.

For Lakeland, Ben Coffman started and pitched seven strong innings allowing four runs on seven hits while striking out five batters. Hudson Widrig relieved and threw 1.1 innings allowing the unearned run in the defeat.

Lakeland coaches state, "We battled throughout the day and played 18 excellent innings. In this second game, we had our chances but just came up one play short. We brought it for 18 innings and it just didn't turn out our way. We are very proud of the effort and the games we played today."
