Heartland explodes offensively to beat Lakers, 13-1

LAKE MYRTLE, Fla. – Lakeland baseball held an early 1-0 lead but Heartland Community College exploded for 13 unanswered runs after that to claim the 13-1 victory Wednesday afternoon.

With the loss, the Lakers fall to 2-5 overall.

Jonathan Johnson supplied the lone RBI for Lakeland and hit two singles in the loss. Matt Detering hit a single and a double while Jack Shepherd added two singles in the loss.

Austin Mora came on in relief for Lakeland and pitched the final two innings while allowing just one earned run while striking out five in two innings.

Lakeland did strike first in the opening inning when Garrett Oliver reached with a one-out single and then came in to score on an RBI single by Johnson for a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, that would be the final run scored by the Lakers as Heartland followed with 13 straight runs for the 13-1 victory.

Lakeland will continue its Florida spring break trip with a doubleheader against Waubonsee Community College on Friday, March 16 beginning at 9 a.m.
