WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Lakeland baseball had a hard time getting the offense going against Waubonsee Community College and could only muster five hits in each game of the doubleheader to lose 8-0 and 7-3 Friday afternoon.
With the pair of loss, the Lakers fall to 2-7 overall.
Waubonsee 8 – Lakeland 0
Lakeland ran into a solid Waubonsee pitching performance and was only able to muster out five hits in an 8-0 shutout loss to open the doubleheader.
Jack Shepherd delivered two of the five hits while Jonathan Johnson, Jacob Nagy and Alec Guy each had a single in the loss.
Waubonsee 7 – Lakeland 3
The Lakers were able to get on the scoreboard in the second game and even tied the game up at 3-3 in the third inning but Waubonsee scored four unanswered runs to win 7-3 and sweep the doubleheader.
Shepherd brought in all three Lakeland runs with a three-run home run as part of his 2-for-4 game. Austin Mora added a pair of singles while Johnson added a single in the loss.
Andrew Smith came on in the sixth inning and did not give up an earned run while striking out one.
Waubonsee got the scoring started with two runs in the opening inning and then added another in the third to take a 3-0 lead. The Lakers battled back in the bottom of the third when Garrett Oliver and Walker Marlowe reached base and Shepherd blasted his three-run shot to tie the game up at 3-3 after three innings.
Waubonsee did add on four runs in the final three innings to grab the four-run victory and claim the sweep.
Lakeland will finish up its Florida spring break trip with a doubleheader against Dakota County Technical College on Saturday, March 17 beginning at 1 p.m.
