ERIE, Pa. – Lakeland baseball had a pair of solid pitching performances but it wasn't enough as Mercyhurst North East was able to sweep the doubleheader by the scores of 4-3 and 4-2 Sunday afternoon.
With the losses, Lakeland's overall record fell to 5-10 and 2-2 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play.
North East 4 – Lakeland 3
Jonathan Johnson belted two home runs and brought in all three runs for Lakeland but the Lakers fell short after North East scored in the bottom of the seventh for a 4-3 victory.
Jacob Nagy and Walker Marlowe each had two singles in the loss. Hudson Widrig pitched well enough to get the winning by going 6 2/3 innings and allowed just four earned runs while striking out five.
North East jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning but Lakeland got on the board in the fifth. Nagy started the fifth with a single and then didn't have to wait to long on the base paths as Johnson belted a two-run home run to get within 3-2.
Johnson struck again in the seventh with a solo home run to tie the game up at 3-3. North East was able to strike last in the bottom of the seventh to pull out a 4-3 walk-off victory.
North East 4 – Lakeland 2
Lakeland was first and last to score but it wasn't enough to get the win as North East held on for a 4-2 victory to sweep the doubleheader.
Nagy had the lone RBI while Marlowe added a pair of singles. Andrew Smith pitched well enough to get the win in pitching six innings and allowing just two earned runs while striking out three in the loss.
Lakeland struck first in the second game in the second inning when Matt Detering started the inning with a double and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Nagy for a 1-0 lead. North East scored two runs in the third and single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to take a 4-1 lead.
Lakeland did threaten in the seventh by loading the bases and Johnson was able to score on a passed ball to get within 4-2 but North East was able to hold on for the two-run victory.
