KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland baseball had a hard time finding offense in the first game and lost 3-1 but the Lakers made up for it in the second game with an 11-4 beating of Eastern Gateway Community College to split the pair Saturday afternoon.
With the split, Lakeland's overall record stands at 8-14 overall and 5-5 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play.
Eastern Gateway 3 – Lakeland 1
Lakeland had a hard time getting any offense going in the opening game and spoiled a solid pitching performance by David Kalinowski as the Lakers lost 3-1 to open the doubleheader.
Kalinowski went seven innings on the mound and only gave up runs in the first two innings and then settled down to allow just two earned runs while striking out two in the loss.
Jacob Nagy had the lone RBI for Lakeland and supplied two singles.
Eastern Gateway jumped out to a 3-0 lead after scoring two in the first inning and adding another in the second. Lakeland got on the board in the fourth when Detering started off the inning with a single and then scored on an RBI single by Nagy up the middle to get within 3-1. Unfortunately, that would be the final run scored by either team as Eastern Gateway held on for the win.
Lakeland 11 – Eastern Gateway 4
Lakeland make up for its lack of offense in the first game by scoring nine runs in the first two innings to roll to an 11-4 victory to take three of four over the weekend from Eastern Gateway.
Alec Guy put together an impressive game with a double, three runs and four RBIs to lead the Lakers. Austin Mora hit a single, double and brought in three runs while picking up the win on the mound. Mora pitched the first four innings and allowed one earned run while striking out seven to notch the victory.
Jonathan Johnson, Alex Newsome and Garrett Oliver each had an RBI in the win.
Eastern Gateway scored one run in the top of the first but that lead disappeared quickly. Walker Marlowe started the bottom of the first with a one-out walk and then scored on an RBI single to center by Johnson to tie the game at 1-1.
Newsome gave Lakeland the lead with a bases-loaded walk for a 2-1 edge. Guy cleared the bases with a three-run double to left for a 5-1 lead. Mora capped the scoring with an RBI single to right for a 6-1 advantage.
After bringing in three in the first inning, Guy added one more in the second with a bases-loaded walk to make the score 7-1. Mora brought in a pair with a double to right for a 9-1 lead. Eastern Gateway got within 9-3 with single runs in the third and fifth innings.
Lakeland padded its lead in the sixth as Seth France singled to begin the inning and then scored on a passed ball for a 10-3 lead. Newsome later scored on an error for an 11-3 lead. Eastern Gateway scored on run in the seventh but that only changed the final score to 11-4.
Lakeland will continue conference play with a makeup doubleheader on the against Clark State Community College on Tuesday, April 17 at 1 p.m.
