SANDUSKY, Ohio – Lakeland baseball was one win away from a trip to the Region XII Tournament after beating Edison State Community College 4-0 but lost to Cuyahoga Community College 5-0 in the Sub-District Final at Sports Force Park Friday afternoon.
The loss to Cuyahoga ends the Lakeland season with a 14-24 overall season as the Lakers finished the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference season with a 7-13 record.
Lakeland 4 – Edison State 0
Lakeland got a solid start from Hudson Widrig and got enough offense to beat Edison State 4-0 in the NJCAA Sub-District playoffs.
Widrig pitched a complete game shutout while striking out 17 while allowing just three hits in the victory.
Alec Guy supplied half the runs for the Lakers with a pair of RBIs with a pair of singles. Matt Detering and Garrett Oliver each had an RBI in the win.
Lakeland got off to fast start in the opening inning as Guy singled to begin the game and Detering brought in the first run with a single in the infield for a 1-0 lead.
The Lakers kept rolling in the second inning as Oliver singled and Jacob Nagy walked to reach base and both scored on a single from Guy for a 3-0 lead.
With Widrig shutting down Edison State, the Lakers finally added more insurance in the ninth inning. Kyle Espineli started the inning with a single and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Oliver for a 4-0 lead that would hold up for the final score.
Cuyahoga 5 – Lakeland 0
Lakeland received a solid pitching performance from Anthony Ward and Andy Gorby but the Lakers could not get any offense on the board in a 5-0 loss to Cuyahoga in the NJCAA Sub-District Tournament championship.
Ward got the start and pitched into the fifth inning and didn't allow an earned run. Gorby came in to finish the game off and allowed just one earned run on four hits.
Lakeland picked up three total hits in the loss. Guy, Matt DiDonato and Alex Newsome each had a single in the loss.
