KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland Community College men's basketball struggled early and was unable to recover in a 94-58 loss to Jackson College in the TJ Memorial Tournament championship game Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, the Lakers finished in second place and now have a 1-3 record on the young season. Ben Sternberg scored 10 points in the loss and was named to the all-tournament team while Micah Hill scored nine and was also named to the all-tournament team.
Jeramie Burge led Lakeland in scoring with 13 points but had to leave the game early due to injury. Lakeland was outrebounded 63-35 in the loss.
Lakeland did get off to a 9-6 lead early on after a jumper by Burge but the momentum quickly shifted. Jackson went on a 29-6 run to take a 35-15 lead with 6:14 left in the half. The Jackson lead hovered right around 20 points for the rest of the first half as Burge scored nine in the first 20 minutes but Lakeland trailed 48-29 at the half.
Trey Granger showed some strong offensive moves in the second half and scored eight points but Lakeland wasn't able to dig into the Jackson lead as the Lakers suffered 36-point loss.
Lakeland will look to bounce back with an Ohio Community College Athletic Conference opener at Hocking College on Saturday, Nov. 18 at 3 p.m.
Devaughn Munson was named most valuable player for Jackson while teammates Jermayne Golidy and Brandon Thomas each earn all-tournament nods. Deontae Robertson earned all-tournament for third place Community College of Beaver County.
