KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland Community College held a seven-point lead with just over six minutes left but Genesee Community College came back to steal away an 87-84 victory Tuesday night.
With the loss, the Lakers fall to 1-5 overall and remain 0-1 in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference.
Trey Granger came out strong for Lakeland and led the way with 22 points and three steals. Jeramie Burge tossed in 16 points, Solomon Hall scored 14 points before fouling out with three minutes left while Cordell Dupree chipped in 12 points in the loss.
Genesee got off to a good start and jumped out to a 12-4 lead in the opening minutes but Lakeland fought back. The Lakers scored seven straight points, capped by a fast-break layup by Burge to tie the game at 22-22 with 6:28 left in the first half.
Granger scored nine points in the opening half and it was his free throw in the closing seconds that gave Lakeland a 39-38 lead at the half.
Hall came out fired up in the second half and scored the first nine points for Lakeland to give his team a 50-45 lead with 16:52 left. The Lakers built up a 64-55 lead after a 3-pointer from Ben Sternberg with 13:08 left but Genesee would keep it close.
Hall converted on a 3-point play with 6:08 left to give Lakeland a 78-71 lead but again Genesee crawled back. Granger score the final five points for Lakeland but a last-second 3-point attempt by Burge missed the mark as Genesee earned the come-from-behind three-point victory.
Lakeland will play in its second conference game on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 7:30 against Lorain County Community College.
