Lakeland gives up too many points in the paint in loss to Columbus State, 103-85

KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland Community College men's basketball didn't have a bad night on offense but defensively, the Lakers gave up too many easy buckets in the paint in a 103-85 loss Monday night.

With the loss, Lakeland falls to 3-16 overall and 2-8 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play.

Trey Granger put together a solid game on offense by scoring 23 points and pulling down six rebounds. Ty Howard hit four 3-pointers and finished with 20 points. Ben Sternberg came off the bench and scored 11 points while Aaron Pate finished with 10 and Chandler Fointno narrowly missed out on a double-double with 10 points and nine assists.

Lakeland struggled out of the gate as Columbus State jumped out to a 9-2 lead in the first four minutes. Columbus State extended that lead to 21-8 with 13:41 left as Lakeland had a hard time getting the game within 10 points.

Howard scored 13 points with the help of three 3-pointers in the first half but Columbus State held on to a 55-37 lead at halftime.

Lakeland had bursts of momentum in the second half to make the game a little closer. After Jeramie Burge hit a layup with 17:19 left the Lakers pulled within 56-43. Unfortunately, Lakeland couldn't get the game any closer than that as Columbus State pulled away for the 18-point victory.

Granger did put together a solid second half with 19 points in the loss.

Lakeland will be back home on Wednesday, Feb. 14 to face No. 3 Cuyahoga Community College at 7:30 p.m.
