Lakeland defeats Hocking in conference opener, 98-63

KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland men's basketball let Hocking College hang around for a little bit in the first half but the Lakers pulled away before halftime and didn't let up in a 98-63 victory Saturday afternoon.

Tyreke Johnson hit 9-of-12 from the field to lead Lakeland with 21 points to help the Lakers improve to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play.

Rob Brown was a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line and finished with 19 points while John Dawson finished with 14 points and seven rebounds in the win.

Johnson was huge in the first half, scoring 15 of his 21 points in the opening 20 minutes to help Lakeland. Hocking kept the game within reach in the first 13 minutes but Lakeland started to break the game open.

Danny Dakdouk came off the bench to nail a 3-pointer with 2:27 left to give the Lakers a 45-25 lead to break the game open. Lakeland expanded the lead to 52-27 at the break.

Getting his first action of the season, Ben Sternberg came off the bench to score nine points in the second half while Brown added eight as Lakeland cruised to the 35-point victory.

Lakeland will next travel to face Mercyhurst North East on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 7:30 p.m. Lakeland and Mercyhurst North East played on Nov. 6 with the Lakers winning by 40.
