PORT HURON, Mich. – Lakeland men's basketball needed a big shot to leave the Skippers Holiday Classic with a 2-0 record and John Dawson stepped up to nail a jumper with 4 seconds left to help Lakeland beat Mid Michigan College 84-83 Saturday afternoon.

Dawson tied for the team-high with 16 points but his jumper gave Lakeland the victory and helped the team improve to 7-2 overall and stay at 1-1 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference. Mid Michigan fell to 4-3 overall.

Cory Fulton also scored 16 points while Deven Musselman hit four 3-pointers to score 12 points. Rob Brown and Tyler Williams each scored 11 points in the win.

Brown and Fulton each scored 10 points for Lakeland in the first half but Mid Michigan had the early edge. Mid Michigan led 33-18 with 5:38 left in the first half but Lakeland was able to trim the lead to six at 38-32 at the half by outscoring Mid Michigan 14-5 in the final five minutes.

Dawson came alive in the second half, scoring 14 of his 16 points in the final half while Musselman nailed all of his 3-pointers in the second half for 12 points and Williams scored 11.

The second half was looking bleak as Mid Michigan built up a 71-52 lead with 6:57 left in the game but Lakeland only gave up 12 points the rest of the way.

Lakeland charged back to level up the score and the lead changed hands three times in the final 27 seconds. Musselman nailed a 3 for a lead with 27 seconds left and then Mid Michigan took the lead back. With 4 seconds left, Dawson nailed his jump shot and Mid Michigan was unable to answer as Lakeland escaped with the one-point victory.

Lakeland will play its final home game on Wednesday, Dec. 5 against Owens Community College at 7:30 p.m. Owens is 0-2 in OCCAC play.
