KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland men's basketball saw Cuyahoga Community College break a tie with a late 3-pointer in the final 10 seconds and was unable to tie the game with a matching 3-pointer as the Lakers fell 68-65 Wednesday night.
Isaiah Washington came off the bench to lead the Lakers with 17 points but Lakeland fell to 18-6 overall and 7-4 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play. Cuyahoga improved to 11-1 in the OCCAC.
Tyreke Johnson added 16 points while John Dawson dropped in 11 points in the loss.
Johnson scored 14 of his 16 points in the opening half and helped Lakeland get off to a decent start. Lakeland jumped out to a 17-9 lead after Cory Fulton hit a pair of free throws with 12:58 left.
The lead went back and forth but the Lakers were able to head into halftime with a slim 37-35 lead.
Washington got the start in the second half and scored 13 of his 17 points in the latter half to help Lakeland.
Scoring and the lead went back and forth in the second half as Chandler Fointno nailed a 3-pointer with 5:36 left to give the Lakers a 60-58 lead. Cuyahoga scored seven straight to take a 65-60 lead with 2:50 left.
That is when Washington scored five consecutive points to tie the game at 65-65 with 2:01 left. Lakeland had a couple shots to take a lead in the final minutes but it was Cuyahoga who hit the 3-pointer with five seconds left that clinched the victory.
Lakeland will hit the road on Saturday, Feb. 16 with a game at Clark State Community College at 3 p.m. Clark State is 5-8 in OCCAC play.
