Lakeland edges Columbus State in overtime, 115-111

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Lakeland men's basketball needed more than 40 minutes of regulation play to earn a road victory as the Lakers edged Columbus State Community College 115-111 Wednesday night.

John Dawson and Tyreke Johnson each scored 30 points as Lakeland improved to 20-6 overall and 9-4 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play. Columbus State dropped to 10-4 in the OCCAC.

Isaiah Washington came off the bench to score 17 points while Jonny Bowers added 14 points in the win.

The first half was a little sluggish for the Lakers as Columbus State outscored Lakeland by 11 points in the first 20 minutes. Dawson did score 11 points as Johnson added 10 points in the first half.

Columbus State led 24-16 with 9:29 left and extended that lead before halftime to take a 45-34 lead into the locker room.

The second half was much better offensively for Lakeland, scoring 66 points in the final 20 minutes. Johnson added 17 points in the second while Washington added 15 and Bowers tossed in 10 points.

After five minutes into the second half, Lakeland trailed by 12 points but ran off seven points in a row as Dawson drilled a 3-pointer to get within 63-58 with 13:25 left.

Trailing 77-73, Lakeland got a layup from Bowers and six straight points from Johnson to take an 81-77 lead with 5:56 left. Columbus State dug into the lead and eventual tied the with 48 seconds left at 100-100 and that is where the score stayed after the end of regulation.

Baskets went back and forth in overtime but Lakeland caught a break as Dawson was fouled and shot three consecutive free throws and made all of them for a 112-109 lead with 43 seconds left. Lakeland never let go of the lead and held on for the four-point victory.

Lakeland will be back home on Wednesday, Feb. 20 for a game against Lorain County Community College at 7:30 p.m. Lorain County is 4-10 in OCCAC play.
