Lakeland starts fast to beat Dakota County to open national tournament, 94-73

DANVILLE, Ill. – No. 10 Lakeland men's basketball got off to a fast start and used that to coast to a 94-73 victory over No. 7 Dakota County Technical College in the opening round of the NJCAA Division II National Tournament.

With the win, Lakeland improves to 26-6 overall and moves on to the national quarterfinals against No. 2 Johnson County Community College on Wednesday, March 20 at 9 p.m.

Jonny Bowers made just about everything from the field as he made 11-of-13 shots to finish with 22 points an grabbed eight rebounds. Chandler Fointno and Tyreke Johnson each had 17 points in the win.

Lakeland jumped out to a 10-2 lead after a pair of free throws from Johnson in the first five minutes of the game. Dakota County got the game a little closer but Lakeland later extended the lead to 11 after Fointno hit a jumper for a 25-16 lead.

The lead only got bigger as Lakeland maintained control and led 46-27 at the half.

Dakota County played better in the second half but Lakeland was able to maintain its big lead and hold on for the 21-point victory.
