Former Lakeland Community College men's soccer player Samuel Mutemwa (Johannesburg, South Africa) was named the male scholar athlete of the year at Lake Erie College for the 2016-17 school year.

While at Lake Erie, Mutemwa was named All-Ohio first team and All-GLIAC second team during his senior season. Following his senior season, Mutemwa signed to play with the Cleveland Legacy of the Premier Arena Soccer League to continue his playing career.

"Not only is he relentlessly driven in pursuit of his own individual goals and excellence but he also knows when to put his team and teammates first," said Reid Guarnieri, Lake Erie athletic director. "He has a unique ability to inspire everyone around him through his positive energy and attitude."

Off the field, Mutemwa was named All-Ohio Academic First Team and was also named to the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team. He graduated from Lake Erie summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in International Business and plans to attend graduate school after graduation.

Mutemwa played for Lakeland during the 2011 and 2012 seasons and was named student-athlete of the year at Lakeland in 2012. He was also the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) and Region XII most valuable player. Mutemwa also earned all-tournament team honors as a midfielder.

"Sammy was a great athlete and student during his time here at Lakeland," said Djuro Peric, Lakeland men's soccer coach. "If I had to make an all-star team with my best 11 players during my 30 years coaching at Lakeland, Sammy would be on that team."
