KIRTLAND, Ohio – Coming up from his defensive position to help on a corner kick, Ivan Matkovic found himself in a position to score and buried the game-winning goal give Lakeland Community College a 2-1 victory over Muskegon Community College Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Lakers improve to 5-3-0 overall and 3-3-0 in Region XII play.
Matkovic delivered his game-winning goal in the 79th minute after Franklin Durugbor was able to deflect the ball to him for the assist to break a 1-1 tie.
Muskegon came out strong and applied offensive pressure to the Laker's defense but was unable to score. After withstanding the pressure, Lakeland was able to get on the scoreboard in the 29th minute when Carlos Pesso placed a forward pass to Olivier Fevrier Sildor who buried the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead that would hold up until halftime.
Muskegon came out with a lot of energy to start the second half and was able to level the score at 1-1 in the 68th minute on a crossing pass that found its way into the net.
Lakeland earned a corner kick in the 79th minute that was kicked by Sildor perfectly to Durugbor who then passed it to Matkovic. After receiving the pass, Matkovic was able to shoot the ball past all of the Muskegon defenders and the keeper for the game-winning goal.
Lakeland will look to complete a 2-0 weekend as it faces Lake Michigan College on Sunday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m.
