Pesso’s overtime game-winner propels Lakeland over Jackson, 3-2

KIRTLAND, Ohio – Carlos Pesso got Lakeland Community College men's soccer going with his first goal and then ended the game nine minutes into overtime with a golden goal to help the Lakers beat Jackson College 3-2 Sunday afternoon.

With the win, Lakeland improves to 7-3-2 overall and 4-3-2 in Region XII play.

Pesso led the way offensively for the Lakers as he scored a goal in the 22nd minute that was assisted by Brendon Mullen. Pesso then put an end to the game in the 99th minute after a long pass from Ivan Matkovic from a free kick at midfield.

Franklin Durugbor scored a goal for Lakeland in the 82nd minute that came from a pass from Pesso. During the 99 minute game, Pesso accumulated five points in the win.

Both teams came out creating scoring chances as Jackson opened up with some shots in the first 20 minutes but it was Lakeland that was able to strike first. Mullen was able to get a crossing pass through the defense and to the foot of Pesso for the opening goal in the 22nd minute. Lakeland's 1-0 lead would hold up until halftime.

Jackson turned up the offensive pressure and scored first in the second half in the 64th minute to knot the game up at 1-1.

The last 10 minutes of regulation turned out to be the most exciting part of the game. First came Durugbor's goal in the 82nd minute after a pass by Pesso to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead. That lead wouldn't last as Jackson scored in the 87th minute to tie the game and eventually force overtime.

In Lakeland's second straight overtime game, the Lakers were able to strike in the final minute of the first overtime period. After a foul was called on Jackson, Matkovic drilled a free kick down toward the Jackson goal and Pesso was able to get behind the defense and knock in a goal off the post for the game-winner.

Lakeland will next hit the road to face Cincinnati State Technical & Community College on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 11 a.m.
