Lakers softball sweeps Univ. of Northwestern Ohio (JV)

The Lady Lakers (8-2) softball team extended their win streak to five in a row as they swept the Racers 9-2 and 7-2 on Tuesday. In game one, the Lakers' Justine Barnes, Jamie Matso, Laura Matso and Danae Scoville each banged out two hits to help lead Lakeland to the victory. Sarah Steigerwald also added an RBI triple.

In this game, the Lakers spotted the Racers an early 2-0 lead. The Lakers battled back in the third by scoring three runs keyed by singles from Jamie Matso and Abbe Mowrer. The Lakers added four more in the fifth. The inning was sparked by a Justine Barnes inside the park homer. On the mound, McKailyn Woodward improved her record to 5-0 as she pitched a complete game allowing six hits and two runs while striking out eight.

In game two, the Lakers banged out 12 hits to roll to the victory. The key was a six hit and five run second inning which was sparked by a Jamie Matso single, consecutive doubles by Emily Woods and Abbe Mowrer, followed by a run scoring single from Laura Matso. In this game, Jamie Matso and Shardonay Miller each collected 3 hits while Emily Woods went two for four (2B, 3B) and added two RBI's. On the rubber, Sydney Aey pitched the complete game giving up two earned runs, striking out five, while scattering seven hits in seven innings.

There has been a change to the schedule for this week as the Lakers will now host Notre Dame JV on Thursday, March 30, in a 3 p.m. doubleheader. Friday, the team is scheduled to travel to Marietta for a 3 p.m. doubleheader. Sunday, April 2, they are scheduled to host Monroe CC in a noon time twinbill.
