Lakers roll Grand Rapids CC

Saturday, the Lady Lakers (14-8) traveled to Grand Rapids Community College to take on the Raiders. The Lakers came away victorious by the scores of 12-0 and 11-7. In game one, Lakeland used a six run first inning to allow McKailyn Woodward to cruise to the fifth inning victory. On the mound, she allowed four hits while striking out four. Justine Barnes got the Lakers rolling when she led the game off with a single, stole second, and later scored on an Emily Woods single. Abbe Mowrer followed with a single before Amber Liederbach knocked them both in on a double to left field. Sydney Aey then singled and that was followed by an RBI single from Laura Matso. Danae Scoville used a bunt single to load the bases. Barnes then followed with her second hit of the inning plating two more runs.

In the first game, Barnes finished with three hits, two runs scored and two RBI's. Amber Liederbach was two for three with three RBI's and two runs scored while Sydney Aey was also two for three with two RBI's and one run scored. Laura Matso and Amber Mowrer each contributed two hits for the Lakers while Emily Woods scored four times.

Game two was much more difficult for the Lakers as they needed a six run seventh inning to give them the come from behind victory. Lakeland's defense failed them early in this game as they had a couple of errors that led to some runs for the Raiders. The teams were back and forth in the early going until Grand Rapids CC grabbed the 6-4 lead after three innings. Shardonay Miller helped cut the lead to 6-5 after six innings when she led off with a single, advanced to second on a fielder's choice, stole third, and then scored on a Laura Matso ground out.

The Lakers would own the seventh inning though. The inning started, Jamie Matso singling in the tying run after Justine Barnes had tripled. This was followed by an Emily Woods single and an Amber Mowrer walk to load the bases. Amber Liederbach then tripled to empty the bases and allow the Lakers to surge ahead. Miller followed that with an RBI double and she would later score on a Laura Matso sacrifice.

Sydney Aey towed the rubber to start the game and lasted two innings giving up five runs. She was the victim of poor defense though as only two of the runs were earned. Abbe Mowrer came on in relief to pitch the next 1.2 innings allowing one unearned run. McKailyn Woodward came back in and finished the game pitching 3.1 innings and giving up one earned run while striking out four for the victory.

The Lakers will host Mercyhurst NE Monday and Walsh University JV on Wednesday. Friday, they will get back into league play as they host Sinclair Community College. Games are scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
