Lakers softball drops key pair to Sinclair

On Friday, the Lady Lakers (14-12) played host to the Sinclair Community College Tartans. In game one, the Lakers were victimized by two late home runs that propelled the Tartans to the 5-4 victory. After a scoreless two innings, the Lakers scored three in the bottom half of the third inning. Laura Matso got it started with a single. Danae Scoville then reached on an error before Justine Barnes doubled them both home. Later in the inning, Emily Woods doubled home Barnes. After a Sinclair score, the Lakers forged back ahead by three after five innings as Taylor Rowe doubled and then scored on an Emily Woods hit that could not be handled by the Tartans shortstop.

The Lakers 4-1 lead after five innings would be short-lived. In the top of the sixth inning, following a run scoring single, Jazzlyn Petry would hit a game tying two-run home run. In the top of the seventh, Mary Massie hit a go ahead solo shot. There was a glimmer of hope in the Lakers half of the seventh as Laura Matso ripped a lead-off single that hit off the Tartan pitcher. After a quick medical check, she stayed in the game and struck out the next Lakeland hitter on a borderline pitch. Slugger Justine Barnes then came to the plate and just missed her pitch. She hit a towering fly ball to center that unfortunately just did not have the distance. The final Lakeland batter then struck out to end the first game. McKailyn Woodward pitched the complete games allowing seven hits and five earned runs while striking out nine Tartan hitters.

Game two would again offer late scoring by the Tartans (eight runs from the fifth inning on) that would give them a 10-6 victory over Lakeland. The Lakers would plate one run in the first as Abbe Mowrer hit an RBI single scoring Justine Barnes. In the third inning the Lakers would score two more runs to take a 3-2 lead going into the fourth. In the third, Jamie Matso would reach on an error and then score on an Emily Woods triple. She would then score on another Mowrer RBI single. In the fifth, the Lakers defense would let them down as the Tartans scored four runs on just three hits. A couple of Lakeland errors accounted for the big inning by Sinclair. The Lakers would tie it back up in the bottom of the fifth. Jamie Matso and Emily Woods both singled to start the inning. Matso would later score on a Tartan error off of the bat of Abbe Mowrer. Woods and Mowrer would later score on a Sydney Aey double. Poor Lakeland defense would again play a big part in another inning where the Tartans would score four runs on just three hits to seal the victory. Sydney Aey started for the Lakers allowing four earned runs over 4.1 innings. McKailyn Woodward relieved and allowed two earned runs.

The Lakers are scheduled to host non-league foe Potomac State College from West Virginia Sunday (4/23). The games are scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. The Lakers will then play host to University of Northwestern Ohio (JV) Tuesday (4/25) in a 3:30 doubleheader. Lakeland will travel to Cuyahoga Wednesday (4/26) and then Notre Dame College (JV) Friday (4/28). Both of those dates will start at 3:30. On Saturday, the Lakers will travel to Genesee for a 2 p.m. twin bill. Sunday's games at Erie CC have been cancelled.
