Lakers softball drops pair to Cuyahoga

Wednesday, the Lady Lakers (17-15) traveled to Parma and dropped a pair of games to the Challengers. The Lakers struggled at the plate in game one as they only managed three hits off of Cuyahoga starter Rachel Ward. After allowing single runs in the first two innings, the Lakers battled back to tie it at two in the top of the fourth inning. Emily Woods had a key run scoring double in the frame. Unfortunately, the Lakers would give the two runs back in the bottom of the fourth inning and the Challengers finished with a 6-2 victory. On the hill, McKailyn Woodward picked up the complete game loss as she surrendered five earned runs and struck out three.

The Lakers got off to a better start in game two as they jumped to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Sydney Aey had a two run single to get the Lakers going. The Lakers gave the two runs back in the bottom of the first. A defensive miscue played a large role in the scoring. The Lakers responded by scoring three more in the top of the second inning. After a Shardonay Miller single, Justine Barnes scored her with an RBI double. Taylor Rowe followed with an RBI single. Emily Woods then followed with an RBI double. The Lakers added a run in the fourth inning when Justine Barnes led off with a triple and later scored on a passed ball. This gave the Lakers a 6-3 lead which they held until the bottom of the fifth inning. In that frame, the Challengers combined a couple of walks, an error, and some timely hits to score four unanswered runs and the ultimate 7-6 victory. Sydney Aey picked up the complete game loss allowing just four earned runs while striking out three batters.

Saturday, the Lakers will travel to Genesee for a 2 p.m. twin bill. The Lakers have also added a doubleheader Sunday as they will travel to Niagara County Community College for a noon doubleheader.
