Lakeland’s Abbe Mowrer named to inaugural OCCAC Sportsperson of the Year team

Abbe Mowrer (Uniontown) put in the work to come back from a knee injury to contribute for the Lakeland Community College softball team and that didn't go unnoticed as she was one of five individuals named to the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference (OCCAC) All-Sportsmanship team.

"Abbe is very deserving of this honor," said Jeff Morganti, Lakeland head softball coach. "She is a great student, a productive softball player and just a great person."

The four other student-athletes that were named to the All-Sportsmanship team were: Dylan Mutchler of Clark State Community College baseball, Jackson Pietzak of Sinclair Community College men's basketball, Annie Lindeman of Owens Community College volleyball and Lauren Roetgerman of Sinclair volleyball.

Mowrer transferred to Lakeland from Marietta College after injuring her knee. Unable to play during the fall season, Mowrer helped the coaches chart pitches and set up equipment just to be part of the team. In the spring, Mowrer was back to playing and appeared in 32 games and brought in 32 RBIs and pitched 23 innings.

Mowrer also showed her dedication off the field as she commuted over an hour from Uniontown to attend class and play softball at Lakeland.  She also was a NJCAA first-team academic All-American with a perfect 4.0 grade point average.

In addition to those five individuals, the 2016-17 OCCAC All-Sportsmanship team includes: Cody Dennis of Sinclair (baseball), Vejer Cox of Clark State (men's basketball), Johnnie Robinson of Columbus State (men's basketball), Cortez Allen of Cuyahoga (men's basketball), Nick Thompson of Edison State (men's basketball), Jamiri Bennett of Owens (men's basketball), Jazzlyn Petry of Sinclair (softball), Vicki Osborne of Columbus State (women's volleyball), Holly Hoffman of Cuyahoga (women's volleyball), Meg Reineke of Sinclair (women's volleyball), Marlena Channels of Clark State (women's basketball), Keyvona Davis of Columbus State (women's basketball), Carly Buzzard of Edison State (women's basketball) and Olivia Frost of Owens (women's basketball).

NOTES: This year's inaugural awards were intended to recognize student-athletes in OCCAC sports who best exemplify good sportsmanship. The award was open to student-athletes in sports that crown a conference champion this year and will expand next year to include one male and one female at-large candidate in other sports.
