KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland softball got a pair of big games from Kallista Hribar and beat Edison State Community College twice in a doubleheader sweep by the scores of 10-6 and 9-6 Saturday afternoon.
With the wins, the Lakers improved to 14-12 overall and 3-5 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play.
Lakeland 10 – Edison State 6
Lakeland used nearly all of its pitching staff in the opening game but found the right combination and had enough offense for a 10-6 victory over Edison State to open the doubleheader.
A lot of that offense came from Kallista Hribar as she hit a home run and triple while bringing in four runs and scoring twice. Elizabeth Montgomery and Jamie Matso each brought in two runs while Justine Barnes and Nicole Ulogar each had an RBI in the win.
Abby Takacs started the game in the circle and pitched into the third inning for the win while giving up three runs. Sydney Aey pitched an inning and then Nicole Watts came on in the fourth inning and finished off the game.
Edison State did jump out to a 1-0 lead after a half inning but Hribar tied the game up with a lead-off home run to knot the score up at 1-1. Edison regained the lead with a single run in the second to take a 2-1 edge.
Hribar again took the lead away from Edison as she walked into the batter's box with the bases loaded and cleared the bases with a three-run triple for a 4-2 lead. Edison scored one in the third to get within 4-3.
The back and forth game continued in the bottom of the third as the Lakers loaded the bases again and Ulogar pushed in a run with a walk for a 5-3 lead. Matso drove in a pair with a single to center for a 7-3 advantage. Montgomery knocked a two-run single to left for a 9-3 edge and then Barnes capped the scoring with an RBI single to left for a 10-3 lead.
Edison did make it a little closer with three runs in the fourth to make it 10-6 but that would be as close as the visitors would get in the four-run victory.
Lakeland 9 – Edison State 6
Hribar continued her impressive day by adding two home runs and three RBIs in a 9-6 victory for Lakeland over Edison to secure the sweep.
After hitting two home runs in her first two at bats, Hribar didn't see another pitch over the plate as Edison elected to avoid the power-hitter. Montgomery and Sam Szoradi each had an RBI in the win.
Watts pitched all seven innings for the victory and was able to dance around trouble to give up five earned runs while striking out three in the win.
Edison started fast with three runs in the opening inning for a 3-0 edge. Hribar started out the second game exactly like the first game, with a home run to get within 3-1 in the bottom of the first. Szoradi belted an RBI double to left to get within 3-2 after an inning.
Lakeland went after the lead in the second as Ulogar started the inning with a single and then scored on an error to tie the game up at 3-3. Hribar gave the Lakers a 5-3 lead with a two-run home run to center.
Ulogar started off the fourth inning with a single as well and came around to score on an RBI single by Montgomery to left for a 6-3 lead. Edison did score two in the sixth to get within 6-5.
Looking for some insurance runs, Lakeland started off the seventh with a single from Ulogar and then she later scored on a passed ball for a 7-5 lead. Matso also scored on a passed ball for the eighth run. Hribar later scored on another passed ball for a 9-5 lead heading into the final inning. Edison did score one run in the seventh to make the final score 9-6.
Lakeland will play two more game at home on Sunday, April 22 against Sinclair Community College beginning at 1 p.m.
