KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland softball scored a total of 39 runs in a doubleheader sweep of University of Northwestern Ohio JV by the scores of 22-4 and 17-6 Thursday afternoon.
With the pair of victories, Lakeland improves to 17-13 overall and remains at 4-6 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play.
Lakeland 22 – Northwestern Ohio JV 4
Lakeland scored 17 runs in the first two innings and the lopsided victory started from there as the Lakers rolled to a 22-4 victory in five innings over Northwestern Ohio JV.
Elizabeth Montgomery brought in six runs after hitting for the cycle to lead the way for the Lakers. Kallista Hribar brought in three runs with a home run and two singles while Dana Turchon also brought in three runs with a pair of singles.
Cameron Malkamaki and Sam Szoradi each brought in two runs while Nicole Ulogar also had an RBI in the win.
Sydney Aey pitched a solid game for Lakeland in going five innings and allowing just two earned runs while striking out four in the win.
Lakeland started fast in the first inning as Hribar and Montgomery singled to begin the game and both scored after a two-run double by Malkamaki for a 2-0 lead. Szoradi followed with a two-run double of her own for a 4-0 edge.
Ulogar nailed an RBI single to the right side for the fifth run of the inning. Montgomery brought in a pair of runs with a double to left for a 7-0 lead. Hribar and Montgomery scored on an error for a 9-0 lead.
The scoring continued in the second inning as Turchon brought in two runs with a single to right for an 11-0 lead. Hribar brought in a run with a single to give the Lakers a 12th run. Montgomery brought in two more runs with a triple to center for a 14-0 lead. Montgomery and Barnes both scored on a wild pitch for the 15th and 16th runs. Turchon made the score 17-0 with an RBI ground out to shortstop. Northwestern Ohio JV scored three in the third to get within 17-3.
The Lakers continued to score as Jamie Matso started the inning with a bunt single and then trotted around the bases after a home run by Hribar for a 19-3 lead.
Turchon started the fourth inning with a single and then scored on a ground out for a 20-3 lead. Montgomery capped the scoring for the Lakers with a two-run home run to center for a 22-3 lead. Northwestern Ohio JV scored one in the fifth to make the final score 22-4.
Lakeland 17 – Northwestern Ohio JV 6
Lakeland trailed by four runs after a half inning but the Lakers stormed back to beat Northwestern Ohio JV 17-6 to secure the sweep.
Barnes led Lakeland with three RBIs with a double. Hribar, Montgomery, Szoradi and Ulogar each had two RBIs in the win. Malkamaki and Turchon each had an RBI in the win.
Aey came on in relief to pitch 3 1-3 innings and allowed only one hit while striking out three to get the win.
Northwestern Ohio JV jumped out to a 4-0 lead after a half inning but Lakeland stormed back in the bottom half.
Barnes cut the lead in half with a two-run double to left to make the score 4-2. Barnes and Malkamaki each scored on an error to tie the game up at 4-4. Yarnell gave Lakeland a 5-4 after scoring on a wild pitch and then Szoradi scored on a passed ball for a 6-4 lead.
Hribar brought in a pair of runs with a triple to right for an 8-4 lead. Montgomery added a triple of her own to center for a 10-4 lead to cap the scoring in the inning.
The scoring continued for Lakeland in the second as Ulogar brought in a pair of runs after a single to give the Lakers a 12-4 lead.
Montgomery started the third inning with a single and then scored a run on a passed ball for a 13-4 lead.
Turchon started off the fourth inning with her first home run of the season for a 14-4 lead. Barnes drove in a run with a sacrifice fly for the 15th run. Hribar scored the 16th run on a wild pitch and then Malkamaki hit an RBI single to the left side for a 17-4 lead. Northwestern Ohio JV scored two in the fifth to make the final score a little closer.
Lakeland will play its final conference doubleheader at home against Cuyahoga Community College on Friday, April 27 at 3 p.m.
