Lakeland loses a pair to Cuyahoga to end season, 12-2 & 6-2

KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland softball had leads in both of its games against Cuyahoga Community College but the Lakers were unable to hold on in both games, losing a pair by the scores of 12-2 and 6-2 Friday afternoon to close out the season.

With the pair of losses to close out the season, the Lakers finish with a 17-15 overall record and 4-8 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play.

Cuyahoga 12 – Lakeland 2

One bad inning changed the complexion of the entire opening game as Cuyahoga scored 11 runs in the third inning and Lakeland was unable to recover in a 12-2 loss to open the doubleheader.

Justine Barnes belted a solo home run while Kallista Hribar had the other RBI for the Lakers in the loss.

Cuyahoga struck first with a single run in the opening inning but Lakeland battled right back as Barnes blasted a home run with two outs in the bottom of the first to tie the game up at 1-1.

The Lakers went after the lead in the second inning when Nicole Ulogar singled to begin the inning and then scored on an RBI single by Hribar to right for a 2-1 Lakeland lead. Unfortunately, that was the final piece of good news for Lakeland as Cuyahoga scored 11 unanswered in the third to claim a 12-2 victory in five innings.

Cuyahoga 6 – Lakeland 2

Lakeland didn't give up a big inning in the second game and kept it much closer but Cuyahoga was able to pull out a 6-2 victory in six innings in a rain-shortened contest to complete the sweep of the Lakers.

Hribar had a solo home run while Cassidy Yarnell had the other RBI for the Lakers. Nicole Watts got the start and gave up three earned runs in five innings of work in the loss.

Lakeland did grab the lead in the first inning as Hribar sprayed a home run to left for a 1-0 lead. Cuyahoga did score two runs in the second and fourth innings to take a 4-1 lead. Barnes helped to get the game a little closer as she led off the fourth with a walk and then scored on a RBI ground out by Yarnell to get within 4-2. Cuyahoga did add single runs in the fifth and sixth innings before rain ended the contest early.
