BEREA, Ohio – Lakeland softball had to come from behind in both games but was able to sweep a doubleheader over Baldwin Wallace University JV by the scores of 9-7 and 7-5 Wednesday afternoon.
With the pair of victories, Lakeland improves to 4-0 on the season.
Lakeland 9 – Baldwin Wallace JV 7
Lakeland used a five-run inning in the sixth to grab a big lead and was able to hold on for the 9-7 victory to open the doubleheader.
Nicole Ulogar brought in a pair of runs with a single and a double. Teyah Sautter also brought in a pair with a double. Elizabeth Montgomery, Abbie Tuttle and MacKenzie Taylor each had an RBI. Montgomery and Cameron Malkamaki each hit a triple in the victory.
Nicole Watts came on in relief in the fourth inning and didn't allow an earned run in four innings to pick up her second win on the season.
Baldwin Wallace struck first with a single run in the first inning but Lakeland fought back in the second. Ulogar singled to begin the inning and Taylor brought her in with a single through the infield to tie the game at 1-1. Baldwin Wallace scored in the bottom half to take a 2-1 lead.
Tuttle helped to tie the game in the third inning with an RBI single to make the score 2-2. Lakeland took its first lead on a two-run double by Ulogar to give the Lakers a 4-2 lead. Baldwin Wallace countered with two runs in the third to tie the game at 4-4.
Lakeland broke the tie in the top of the sixth as Ely Miller and Elena Logan singled to get on back and Sautter brought both in with a double to left for a 6-4 lead. Montgomery followed with an RBI single to left for the seventh run. Sautter later scored on a wild pitch and Montgomery scored on a passed ball for a 9-4 lead. Baldwin Wallace scored three in the seventh but Lakeland was able to hold on for the two-run victory.
Lakeland 7 – Baldwin Wallace JV 5
It came down to the last inning for Lakeland as the Lakers scored three in the final inning to oull out the 7-5 come-from-behind victory to sweep Baldwin Wallace JV.
Miller brought in three runs with a triple while Montgomery and Malkamaki each brought in a run in the win.
Glendy Bergdorf got the start and finished off the game to pitch five total innings and not allow an earned run to get the win to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Baldwin Wallace scored one run in the first inning and it took a while for the Lakeland to get some offense going. Sautter walked to begin the fifth and tie the game when she scored after an error. Montgomery and Ulogar later scored on an error to give Lakeland a 3-1 lead. Baldwin Wallace scored one in the bottom of the fifth to get within 3-2.
Sautter got Lakeland going with a two-out walk and then scored following a single by Montgomery to give the Lakers a 4-2 lead. Baldwin Wallace scored three runs in the sixth to take a 5-4 lead heading into the final inning.
Lakeland loaded the bases after singles by Gabriella Monastero and Ulogar and a walk by Abbie Tuttle. Miller cleared the bases with a triple down the left field line to give Lakeland a 7-5 lead that would hold up at the end of the game.
Lakeland will next play a doubleheader at Walsh University JV on March 14 beginning at 3:30 p.m.
