NORTH CANTON, Ohio – After losing its first game of the day by one run, Lakeland softball charged back in the second game to earn a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over Walsh University JV to earn a split of the doubleheader Thursday afternoon.
Lakeland lost the first game 3-2 in extra innings. After the split, Lakeland's overall record moves to 5-1.
Walsh JV 3 – Lakeland 2
Lakeland held a 2-1 lead after scoring in the top of the seventh but Walsh was able to score one in the bottom of the seventh and eight to steal away a 3-2 victory.
Teyah Sautter had the lone RBI for Lakeland and added a single. Nicole Ulogar and Elizabeth Montgomery each had two singles in the loss.
Sautter pitched all seven plus innings and did not allowed an earned run in the tough-luck loss while striking out two.
Walsh struck first with a single run in the bottom of the first but Lakeland came right back in the second. Elena Logan got it started with a one out single and scored on an RBI single by Sautter to tie the game up at 1-1.
Lakeland was able to take the lead in the seventh when Gabriella Monastero reached base on an error and then scored to give the Lakers a 2-1 lead. The lead did not hold as Walsh tied the game in the seventh and walked off in the eighth for the win.
Lakeland 5 – Walsh JV 4
Lakeland was outhit in the second game and trailed 3-0 heading into the final inning but the Lakers stormed back with five runs in the seventh to come away with the 5-4 victory.
Monastero supplied more than half the runs with three RBIs and a double while Montgomery and Sautter each had an RBI in the win. Logan added a double and scored a run.
Glendy Bergdorf picked up the win in the circle by pitching all seven innings and not allowing an earned run.
Walsh jumped ahead 3-0 with two runs in the second and one in the sixth but Lakeland managed to come back. Lakeland loaded the bases and Sautter brought in the first run with a single in the infield to get within 3-1.
Montgomery got the Lakers within one with a bases loaded walk for the second run and then Monastero provided the big boost with a three-run double to left to give Lakeland a 5-3 lead. Walsh did score one in the bottom of the seventh but Bergdorf was able to hold on for the victory.
Lakeland will next player at Muskingum University JV on Saturday, March 16 with the doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
