NEW CONCORD, Ohio – Lakeland softball lost a one-run game 7-6 to open a doubleheader against Muskingum University JV and then dropped the second game 10-2 to suffer a sweep Saturday afternoon.

With the pair of losses, Lakeland's overall record falls to 5-3.

Muskingum 7 – Lakeland 6

Lakeland led 6-5 in the middle of the fifth but Muskingum tied the game in the fifth and then won the game in the seventh with a run in the opening game.

Nicole Ulogar hit a double and a single and brought in two runs. Cameron Malkamaki hit a solo home run while Ely Miller, MacKenzie Taylor and Teyah Sautter each had an RBI in the loss.

Lakeland got off to a fast start as Elizabeth Montgomery was hit by a pitch to open the game and Malkamaki singled as Ulogar brought in both with a double to center for a 2-0 lead. Miller brought in the third run with an RBI single to center for a 3-0 lead. Muskingum tied the game at 3-3 after two innings with two runs in the first and one more in the second.

The Lakers went after the lead in the third with two outs as Miller started it off with a two out single and then Taylor gave Lakeland a 4-3 lead with a single up the middle. Malkamaki boosted the lead to 5-3 with a solo home run in the fourth inning. Muskingum tied the game up again in the fourth with two runs to level the score at 5-5.

Lakeland again grabbed the lead in the fifth as Elena Logan began the inning with a single and then scored on an RBI single by Sautter for a 6-5 lead. Unfortunately, that was the final run scored by Lakeland as Muskingum scored the final two runs to steal away the victory.

Muskingum 10 – Lakeland 2

Lakeland scored two runs in the opening inning but Muskingum exploded in the later innings to take a 10-2 victory to complete the sweep.

Tuttle brought in both runs for Lakeland as she hit her first home run of the season and added a single. Gabriella Monastero hit a triple and Malkamaki hit a double in the loss.

The only offense for Lakeland came in the first inning as Malkamaki reached base with a two-out double and Tuttle homered to left for a 2-0 lead. That was the final run scored by Lakeland as Muskingum scored 10 runs in the final four innings to come away with a 10-2 lead.

Lakeland will next player a doubleheader on Friday, March 22 at Marietta College JV beginning at 3:30 p.m.
