MARIETTA, Ohio – Lakeland softball headed into the final inning tied 2-2 but then scored three runs in the seventh to pull out a 5-3 victory over Marietta College JV Friday afternoon.
With the win, Lakeland breaks a two-game losing streak and improves to 6-3 overall.
Elena Logan hit a single and a double and brought in two runs. Abbie Tuttle, Nicole Ulogar and Teyah Sautter each had an RBI while Cameron Malkamaki added a double.
Sautter pitched all seven innings for Lakeland for her first win in the circle while allowing only two earned runs while striking out a pair.
Lakeland used patience to get on the board in the first inning as Elizabeth Montgomery, Malkamaki and Tuttle all walked. Ulogar also walked with the bases loaded to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. Marietta scored one in the third to tie the game up at 1-1.
Lakeland went after the lead again in the fifth and it started when Gabi Monastero reached base on a dropped third strike. Sautter brought in Monastero with an RBI single to left for a 2-1 lead. The lead didn't last long as Marietta tied the game in the bottom of the inning to make the score 2-2.
The Lakers saved all the offensive heroics for the final inning with two outs. Malkamaki started it with a double and then Tuttle followed with an RBI double to right for a 3-2 lead. Logan followed with a two-run double to give Lakeland a 5-2 lead. Marietta scored one in the bottom of the inning but Lakeland held on for the two-run victory.
Lakeland will next hit the road and face Mercyhurst North East on Tuesday, March 26 for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
