Lakeland mashes 20 hits in beating Edison State in opener, 8-1

PIQUA, Ohio – Lakeland softball crushed 20 hits in the opening game of a doubleheader against Edison State Community College in an 8-1 victory Saturday afternoon.

The Lakers lost the second game 10-5 to earn a split on the day. With the split, Lakeland moves to 7-12 overall and 1-3 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play.

Lakeland 8 – Edison State 1

Lakeland collected 20 hits and had Teyah Sautter dealing in the circle to earn an 8-1 victory to open the doubleheader at Edison State.

Sautter pitched all seven innings and gave up seven hits and only one earned run while striking out five to get the win.

Abbie Tuttle hit a single and a double and brought in two runs while Sautter helped her own cause with two doubles and two RBIs in the win. Cameron Malkamaki, Gabriella Monastero and Elena Logan each had an RBI in the win.

Lakeland got off to a great start as Tuttle ripped an RBI single to center for the first run in the opening inning. Malkamaki followed with an RBI single and then Sautter brought in a pair with a double to left for a 4-0 lead.

Monastero tacked on another run in the third inning with an RBI double to center for a 5-0 lead. Braelyn Horn scored on an error in the fourth inning to make the score 6-0. Tuttle added an RBI double to center in the sixth to make the score 7-0. Edison State scored one run in the sixth to get within 7-1.

Logan put the finishing touch on the game with an RBI single in the infield to give Lakeland the 8-1 lead that would end up as the final score.

Edison State 10 – Lakeland 5

Lakeland led 2-1 after two innings in the second game but was unable to keep Edison State off the scoreboard in a 10-5 loss to get a split of the doubleheader.

Tuttle brought in a pair of runs with a double and two singles while Monastero, MacKenzie Taylor and Ely Miller each had an RBI in the loss.

Edison State got on the board first with a single run in the first but Lakeland came back in the second. Taylor tied the game at 1-1 with an infield single and then Miller doubled to center for a 2-1 Laker lead. Edison State scored three on a home run in the third to take a 4-2 lead.

Monastero doubled in a run in the fourth to get Lakeland within 4-3 but then Edison State scored two in the bottom half and then four more in the sixth for a 10-3 lead.

Tuttle did double in a pair of runs in the seventh to get within 10-5 but could not get the game any closer.

Lakeland will hit the road on Tuesday, April 9 for another conference doubleheader at Cuyahoga Community College beginning at 3:30 p.m.
