PERRYSBURG, Ohio – Lakeland softball compiled 25 runs and had two solid pitching performances to sweeping Owens Community College by the scores of 17-5 and 8-0 as both games ended in five innings Saturday afternoon.
With the sweep, Lakeland improves to 9-14 overall and 3-5 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play. Owens falls to 0-6 in conference.
Lakeland 17 – Owens 5
Lakeland started fast and kept supplying run support to beat Owens 17-5 in five innings in the opening game.
Asianna Settles got the start in the circle and allowed five earned runs while striking out six to get her first win on the season. Settles also brought in four runs with a double and two singles.
Abbie Tuttle, Nicole Ulogar and Ely Miller each had three RBIs while Elizabeth Montgomery brought in two runs, including a solo home run. Cameron Malkamaki and Elena Logan each brought in one run.
Settles helped her own cause right from the beginning with an RBI double to center for a 1-0 lead. Tuttle brought in a pair with a double to right and then Logan made the score 4-0 with an RBI ground out. Owens battled back with three in the bottom half to get within 4-3.
Settles got the scoring started in the second inning as well with an infield single to make the score 5-3. Malkamaki brought in the sixth run with a sacrifice fly. Ulogar belted a triple later in the inning to score two and then scored on a throwing error to give Lakeland a 9-3 lead.
MacKenzie Taylor started the third with a walk and pinch runner Braelyn Horn came in to run. Horn later scored on an RBI single by Settles to give the Lakers a 10-3 lead. Owens got a couple runs in the bottom of the third to get within 10-5.
Logan and Horn started a rally in the fourth with one out single and both scored on a two-run single for a 12-5 lead. Montgomery brought in the 13th run with a single to center and then came in to score on a sacrifice fly by Settles to give Lakeland a 14-5 lead. Tuttle capped the scoring with a single to right for a 15-5 lead.
Lakeland added a couple more runs in the fifth as Horn hit a one out single and then scored on an RBI ground out by Miller for a 16-5 lead. Montgomery delivered the finishing touch with a solo home run to left for a 17-5 lead that would hold up until the end of the inning to end the game early.
Lakeland 8 – Owens 0
Runs didn't come as easily for Lakeland in the second game but received a solid pitching performance from Glendy Bergdorf and plenty of run support for the 8-0 victory to earn the sweep.
Bergdorf only gave up three hits and struck out two to earn the shutout victory in the circle.
Gabriella Monastero and Settles each brought in a run in the win while Tuttle hit a double and Ulogar added a triple and a single for Lakeland.
Lakeland got a little offense going in the second inning when Malkamaki reached base on a walk, stole second and reached home on a passed ball for a 1-0 lead. Horn got the offense going with a lead off single and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Monastero for a 2-0 lead.
The offense kept coming in the fourth inning as Malkamaki singled to lead off and then scored on a wild pitch for a 3-0 lead. Tuttle doubled to reach base and then scored the fourth run on an Owens error. Ulogar kept the inning going with a triple and then scored on an error for a 5-0 lead.
Settles delivered a run in the fifth inning with an RBI single in the infield for a 6-0 lead. Settled later scored on a passed ball and Tuttle scored on an error for an 8-0 lead that would hold up until the final out.
Lakeland will host its first home doubleheader on Tuesday, April 16 against Cuyahoga Community College at 3:30 p.m. Cuyahoga is currently 7-1 in the OCCAC.
