Lakers swept by Cuyahoga in home opener, 6-0 & 13-3

KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland softball was swept by Cuyahoga Community College in its home opening doubleheader by the scored of 6-0 and 13-3 Wednesday afternoon.

With the losses, Lakeland drops to 9-16 overall and 3-7 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play. Cuyahoga improves to 8-1 in conference.

Cuyahoga 6 – Lakeland 0

Lakeland could only muster three hits in the opening game and Cuyahoga got just enough to earn the 6-0 victory to open the doubleheader.

Nicole Ulogar hit a double while Asianna Settles and Abbie Tuttle each hit a single in the loss.

Cuyahoga scored one in the opening inning then added three in the second for a 4-0 lead. Cuyahoga added two more in the sixth to earn the 6-0 victory.

Cuyahoga 13 – Lakeland 3

Lakeland did a better job on offense in the second game but spotted Cuyahoga eight runs in the first two innings and lost 13-3 in five to suffer the sweep.

Ulogar, Tuttle and Elena Logan each had an RBI in the loss while Braelyn Horn added a triple in the second game.

Cuyahoga scored four in the first inning but Lakeland scored its first run of the day in the bottom half. Elizabeth Montgomery started the inning with a single and then scored on an RBI single to center to get within 4-1. Cuyahoga added four more runs in the second to take an 8-1 lead.

Lakeland showed fight in the bottom of the second with a triple by Horn and then Logan knocked her in with a sacrifice fly to center to get within 8-2. Cuyahoga scored two in the fourth and three in the fifth to take a 13-2 lead.

Facing an early ending, Cameron Malkamaki reached base with a two-out walk and then came in to score on an RBI single by Tuttle to the right side to get within 13-3 but that would be the final run scored as Cuyahoga ended the game after five.

Lakeland will next host Sinclair Community College on Friday, April 19 for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m. Sinclair is currently 6-2 in conference play.
