KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland softball fell behind early in both games and Sinclair Community College took advantage for sweep by the scores of 7-0 and 18-7 Thursday afternoon.
With the pair of losses, Lakeland falls to 9-18 overall and 3-9 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play. Sinclair improved to 10-2 in conference.
Sinclair 7 – Lakeland 0
Lakeland could only get one hit in the opening game and Sinclair had plenty of run support in a 7-0 win to open the doubleheader.
Asianna Settles had the only hit for the Lakers but it was a double.
Sinclair scored two in the second followed by single runs in the fifth and sixth. Sinclair added three more in the seventh to close out the seven-run victory.
Sinclair 18 – Lakeland 7
Lakeland did add some run support in the second game but the runs came when the Lakers trailed 8-0 in the middle of the third as Sinclair held on for the 18-7 victory in five innings to close out the sweep.
Abbie Tuttle muscled in three runs with a home run while Cameron Malkamaki also brought in three runs and added a double. Ely Miller had the other RBI and scored twice in the loss.
Sinclair built up its 8-0 lead in the middle of the third with five in the first, two in the second and one in the third.
Lakeland did get on the board for the first time in the day as Miller walked and Settles was hit by a pitch for the second time in the game and then Tuttle followed with a towering home run to left to get Lakeland within 8-3. Sinclair put up nine in the fourth to deflate the Lakeland hopes to take a 17-3 lead.
Lakeland still showed fight as Braelyn Horn singled with one out and then scored on an RBI single by Miller to center to get within 17-4. Malkamaki brought in three with a double to center to get within 17-7 but that would be the final run scored by Lakeland. Sinclair added a single run in the fifth to make the final score 18-7.
Lakeland will host another conference team as Owens Community College visits on Friday, April 26 for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 p.m.
