Lakeland run rules Edison State to open doubleheader, 9-1

KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland softball hit four balls over the fence in the opening game of a 9-1 victory over Edison State Community College Saturday afternoon to open the doubleheader.

Edison State came back to win the second game 8-5 to force a split of the doubleheader. With the split, Lakeland moves to 10-19 overall and 4-10 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play. Edison State moved to 3-7 in conference.

Lakeland 9 – Edison State 1

Asianna Settles hit two home runs and Gabriella Monastero and Abbie Tuttle each hit one home run as Lakeland powered its way to a 9-1 victory in five innings to open the doubleheader.

Settles hit two solo home runs to bring in two runs. Monastero brought in three runs and Tuttle brought in a pair of runs. MacKenzie Taylor and Elizabeth Montgomery each had an RBI in the victory.

Teyah Sautter pitched all five innings and allowed just one earned run on four hits while striking out one to get the victory.

Settles gave Lakeland the lead in the second inning with a solo home run but Edison tied the game at 1-1 in the third inning.

The Lakers saved most of their offense for the fifth inning as Taylor gave Lakeland a 2-1 lead with a double to right. Montgomery followed by laying down a bunt to squeeze home a run for a 3-1 lead.

Monastero broke the game open with a three-run home run for a 6-1 lead. Ball just kept flying over the fence in the fifth as Tuttle added a two-run home run and then Settled ended the game with a solo home run for a run rule walk-off victory in the fifth.

Edison State 8 – Lakeland 5

Lakeland was unable to hold onto an early 4-2 lead as Edison State charged back for an 8-5 victory to earn the split.

Elena Logan added a home run and two singles to bring in two runs. Monastero also added two RBIs while Braelyn Horn pushed in an RBI in the loss.

Edison State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the middle of the second but Lakeland came right back in the bottom half. Nicole Ulogar started the rally with a one-out walk and then scored on a ground out by Horn to get within 2-1. Monastero followed later in the inning with a two-run single to left to give Lakeland a 3-2 lead.

Lakeland added to its lead in the third as Ulogar doubled with two outs and then Logan followed with a single to right for a 4-2 lead. Edison State came back to take a 6-4 lead in the middle of the fifth. Logan brought the Lakers within 6-5 with a solo home run but that would be the final run scored as Edison State added two more insurance runs for the three-run victory.
