KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland Community College women's basketball shook off a sluggish early start and pulled away with an impressive second half to earn a 102-52 victory over Genesee Community College Tuesday night.
With the non-conference win, the Lakers continue their fast start with a 6-0 overall record. Lakeland remains 1-0 in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference.
Lakeland had a balanced scoring attack and was led by Aryana Jackson with 19 points, including five 3-pointers and added six rebounds. Delesha Jackson chipped in 18 points and seven rebounds.
Armani Jackson scored 15 points and added eight rebounds, Brittney Prugel scored 12 points on four 3-pointers while Angel Cannon and Lauryn Mitchell each scored 10 in the victory.
Lakeland struggled in the opening minutes as Genesee scored the first nine points but the Lakers were able to recover. Aryana Jackson came off the bench to score five points and Lakeland crawled back to take a 17-15 lead after the first quarter.
Play improved for Lakeland on both sides of the ball as bench play helped out again as Lauryn Mitchell chipped in 10 points as the Lakers outscored Genesee 26-19 to take a 43-34 lead at the break.
Lakeland employed a stifling defense to begin the second half and looked like a different team. That defense led to 37-8 advantage in the third led by Delesha Jackson with 11 to take an 80-42 lead heading into the fourth.
The Lakers cruised to victory in the fourth quarter behind nine points from Prugel. Lakeland outscored Genesee 22-10 to claim the 50-point victory.
Lakeland will have its first conference game at home when it hosts Lorain County Community College on Wednesday, Nov. 29 at 5:30 p.m.
