KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland Community College women's basketball had a tough time stopping the dribble penetration and post play in a 68-56 loss to No. 9 Owens Community College Wednesday night.
With the loss, the Lakers fall to 11-4 overall and 4-2 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play.
Delesha Jackson played the entire game and scored 16 points to lead the way. Aryana Jackson finished with 11 points and five rebounds while Jayla Sanford tossed in 10 points in the loss.
Normally a solid shooting team, Lakeland finished shooting 29.2 percent from the field and 18.5 percent from behind the 3-point line while Owens shot 50 percent on 26-of-52 shooting.
Lakeland held its own with the ninth-ranked team in NJCAA Division II in the first quarter as Sanford hit a layup on a fast break to give the Lakers a 14-8 lead with 1:40 left. Owens would score the final five points of the quarter to get within 14-13 after one. Aryana Jackson led Lakeland with five points in the first.
Momentum slipped away a bit in the second quarter for Lakeland as Owens came out strong and scored 23 points in the quarter. Delesha Jackson scored five in the quarter for Lakeland but it was Owens holding a 36-29 lead at the half.
Lakeland struggled offensively in the third quarter and scored only 10 points compared to 19 for Owens. Delesha Jackson did score six points but the Lakers trailed 55-39 heading into the fourth quarter.
Lakeland did play better in the fourth quarter and brought the game a little bit closer but the Lakers could not get within 10 points in the fourth. Sanford did return from an injury to score six points in the final quarter but Owens held on for the 12-point victory.
Lakeland will next hit the road on Saturday, Jan. 27 to face Sinclair Community College for a game at 1 p.m.
