KIRTLAND, Ohio – After an atrocious third quarter, Lakeland Community College women's basketball was able to recover in the fourth to earn a 67-57 victory over Cuyahoga Community College Wednesday night.
This is the second time that the Lakers have beat Cuyahoga by 10 points this season as Lakeland improves to 15-5 overall and 7-3 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play.
Lakeland had a balanced scoring attack led by Armani Jackson earning a double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds. Brianna Williams also scored 15 points while Delesha Jackson finished with 14 points and Jayla Sanford scored 11 points in the win.
Points were hard to come by for Lakeland early on as Cuyahoga jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first four minutes. The Lakers got going as Ziona Williams nailed a 3-pointer to tie the game up at 6-6 and Lakeland scored the final 13 points of the quarter for a 14-6 lead after one.
The momentum carried over into the second quarter as Delesha Jackson scored nine points in the second and Lakeland extended its lead to 37-19 at the half.
Cuyahoga came out with a lot of energy in the third and Lakeland came out flat. Cuyahoga outscored Lakeland 26-11 in the third and got within three at 48-45 heading into the fourth.
Lakeland lost its momentum in the second half but the Lakers never lost the lead as the Lakers were able to fend off the furious rally from Cuyahoga. Brianna Williams served as the closer in the fourth with six points on 3-of-6 shooting to help the Lakers hold on for the 10-point victory.
Lakeland will hit the road this weekend and face Edison State Community College on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 1 p.m.
