Lakeland lets lead slip away in overtime loss to Edison State, 95-89

KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland Community College women's basketball was in great position to seal up a win at home but Edison State Community College sank a pair of 3-pointers in the final 30 seconds and beat the Lakers in overtime 95-89 Wednesday night.

With the loss, Lakeland falls to 15-8 overall and 7-6 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play.

Armani Jackson played the entire 45 minutes and finished with 25 points and 12 rebounds in the loss. All starters reached double figures for the Lakers as Ziona Williams and Delesha Jackson each scored 18 while Jayla Sanford and Brianna Williams each scored 10 points.

Lakeland had a rough start to the first quarter as Edison jumped out to an 11-4 lead but the Lakers recovered nicely. Brianna Williams tied the game up at 17-17 with a layup and Lakeland finished the quarter on a 9-2 run to hold a 26-19 lead after one quarter. Sanford and Armani Jackson each scored seven in the opening quarter.

Edison again started a quarter off right and got within 30-27 with 5:57 left in the half. Ziona Williams helped to get the Lakers back in control with her nine points in the second to help Lakeland outscore Edison 19-12 in the second to take a 47-31 lead at the half.

Edison owned the third quarter after outscoring the Lakers 32-17. Armani Jackson scored eight points in the quarter but Edison stormed back to take a 63-62 lead heading into the fourth.

With Lakeland holding a 65-64 lead with 8:23 left, the Lakers scored six consecutive points to take a 71-64 lead after a free throw from Delesha Jackson with 5:43 left.

For Lakeland, it all came down to the final seconds as Delesha Jackson made a free throw for an 81-75 lead with 28 seconds. Edison sank two 3-pointers in the final 28 seconds and Lakeland missed a pair of free throws between the two made 3-pointers to force overtime with the game tied at 81-81.

Edison scored the first eight points of overtime and never let Lakeland back in the game as Edison held on for the six-point victory.

Lakeland will finish up the regular season with a home game against Sinclair Community College on Saturday, March 3 at 1 p.m.
