KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland Community College had all five starters score in double figures and pulled away for a 63-52 victory over Cuyahoga Community College in the NJCAA Region XII District I Quarterfinal.
With the win, the Lakers improve to 16-9 overall and earn a spot in the semifinals. Lakeland will next face Owens Community College on Friday, March 9 at 1 p.m. at Ohio Christian University in Circleville.
Armani Jackson led the way for the Lakers with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Ziona Williams scored 14 points and had five steals. Delesha Jackson earned 11 points while Jayla Sanford and Brianna Williams each scored 10 points in the win. A big reason for the victory is that Lakeland was able to force 31 Cuyahoga turnovers.
Lakeland had a rough time shooting in the first quarter but was able to jump out to an early lead. The Lakers grabbed a 15-9 lead after making just 3-of-16 from the field. Sanford was able to score six in the first.
The poor shooting percentage continued in the second quarter but Lakeland was able to outscore Cuyahoga 15-14. The Lakers made just 4-of-19 from the field but led 30-23 at the half. Brianna Williams scored five in the second for Lakeland.
The third quarter was the only quarter that Cuyahoga was able to outscore Lakeland, but only by two points. Lakeland held a 44-39 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Lakeland never gave up its lead in the fourth quarter as Ziona Williams scored six points to help the Lakers hold of for the 11-point victory.
