KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland women's basketball came out strong defensively and use that to half Kent State Club to zero points in the first quarter as the Lakers rolled to a 78-25 victory Friday evening to open the TJ Memorial Tournament.
The Lakers improved to 2-0 with the lopsided victory with the help of Calasia Cunningham scoring 19 points and adding five rebounds.
Alicia Sephus came off the bench to score 15 and grab 13 total rebounds, including 10 on the offensive end. Destiny Khay added 12 points while Ziona Williams chipped in 10 points.
Lakeland was able to hold Kent State Club scoreless in the first 10 minutes while Cunningham opened up with nine in the first to help Lakeland to an 18-0 lead.
Arielle DeBase and Sephus teamed up in the second quarter to keep Lakeland's advantage. Both DeBase and Sephus scored six as the Lakers outscored Kent State Club 22-4 to take a 40-4 lead into halftime.
Williams scored eight of her 10 total points in the third quarter as Lakeland continued to roll to a 58-10 lead heading into the fourth.
Sephus helped to finish off the game as she added nine rebounds and nine points in the final 10 minutes to close out Kent State Club at home.
Lakeland will play its final game in the TJ Memorial Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 10 a.m. against Oakland Community College.
