PORT HURON, Mich. – Lakeland women's basketball had its worst shooting night of the young season and still had a chance to win its game but lost in the final seconds to host St. Clair County Community College 63-62 in the opening game of the Skippers Holiday Classic Friday night.

The loss is the first of the season for the Lakers as their record falls to 7-1 overall. Lakeland remains 2-0 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference. St. Clair County improved to 2-4 on the season.

Delesha Jackson led the way for Lakeland with 13 points and she grabbed nine rebounds. Calasia Cunningham scored 11 points and Selah Richardson also reached double figures with 10 points. Alicia Sephus scored six points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the loss.

Making shots was a challenge for the Lakers all night as they made just 21-of-101 shots for a 20.8 shooting percentage.

Lakeland did start out strong in the first quarter as Julie Hajdu hit a couple of 3-pointers as the Lakers grabbed a 17-12 lead after one.

Richardson came off the bench to score five points in the second quarter but St. Clair County outscored Lakeland 18-10 to claim a 30-27 lead at halftime.

Jackson scored more than half of her total points in the third as she finished with seven in the quarter as Lakeland outscored St. Clair County 20-14 to claim a 47-44 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Cunningham and Jackson each scored six points in the fourth for Lakeland but it was St. Clair County taking a 61-58 lead with 1:48 left to play. Destiny Khay nailed a 3-pointer with 38 seconds left to tie the game and then a free throw from Jackson gave Lakeland a 62-61 lead with 9 seconds left.

Lakeland committed a foul with 2 seconds left in the game and St. Clair County nailed both free throws to steal away the victory.

Lakeland will play its final game in the Skippers Holiday Classic on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 11 a.m. against Mid Michigan College. Mid Michigan is 5-0 on the season.
