KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland women's basketball used a big fourth quarter to beat Bryant & Stratton College (Ohio) 83-66 Wednesday night.
In her first game of the calendar year, Destiny Khay nailed eight 3-pointers to lead with Lakers with 26 points and help Lakeland improve to 10-5 overall. Lakeland stayed 3-0 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play.
Selah Richardson came off the bench to score 16 points and grab 10 rebounds. Julie Hajdu chipped in 14 points and Alicia Sephus added 10 points and 12 rebounds in the win.
Sephus and Khay teamed up in the first quarter for Lakeland and each score eight points as Lakeland was able to grind out a 25-21 lead after one period. Twelve total fouls were called in the first 10 minutes of the game.
Lakeland struggled shooting from the field as the Lakers only made 3-of-24 shots in the second period and Bryant & Stratton took advantage to outscore Lakeland 13-9 in the period. Richardson was able to score six in the period but Bryant & Stratton came back to tie the game up at 34-34 at the half.
The Lakers shot much better in the third quarter, making 7-of-11 3-point shots and scored 27 points in the period. Khay went 4-for-4 from behind the arc and scored 12 points as Lakeland crept ahead of Bryant & Stratton 61-58 heading into the fourth.
Defense was able to step up for Lakeland in the fourth, only allowing eight points to Bryant & Stratton in the final period while the Lakers scored 22 points to pull away. Khay and Richardson each scored six points to help Lakeland cruise to the 17-point victory.
Lakeland will get back into conference play at home on Saturday, Jan. 12 at 1 p.m. against Clark State Community College. Clark State is 1-3 in OCCAC play.
