KIRTLAND, Ohio – An extremely slow start for Lakeland women's basketball helped Sinclair Community College pull out a 61-47 victory Saturday afternoon.
The Lakers shot just 20.5 percent from the field and had an off night on offense. With the loss, Lakeland falls to 13-6 overall and 6-1 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play. Sinclair improved to 5-1 in OCCAC play.
Destiny Khay did get going in the second half and finished with 18 points on five made 3-pointers for Lakeland.
Delesha Jackson chipped in 14 points and eight rebounds while Alicia Sephus grabbed 14 rebounds and scored eight.
The first quarter was a tough one for Lakeland as the Lakers scored their first points just after six minutes of play. Jackson scored the only two points for Lakeland as Sinclair grabbed a 16-2 lead after a quarter of play. Lakeland made just 1-of-20 shots in the opening quarter.
Lakeland played better offensively in the second quarter as Khay hit a pair of 3-pointers to get the Lakers going. Sinclair was still able to outscore Lakeland 14-12 to take a 30-14 lead into halftime.
The Lakers came out firing in the third and shot out to a 12-1 run to get within 31-26 after a pair of free throws from Sephus with 6:15 left in the quarter. The only problem was that Lakeland only score three more points the rest of the quarter and Sinclair finished the third on a 15-3 run to claim a 46-29 lead heading into the fourth.
The fourth was the only quarter that Lakeland was able to outscore Sinclair. Jackson scored seven and Khay dropped six as the Lakers edged Sinclair 18-15 but that wasn't enough to come all the way back as Sinclair held on for the 14-point victory.
