PERRYSBURG, Ohio – Lakeland women's basketball got off to a slow start in the first half and Owens Community College took advantage for a 65-44 victory Saturday afternoon.

Lakeland had beat Owens previously in Kirtland but lost in Perrysburg to fall to 16-7 overall and 8-2 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play. Owens improved to 10-2 in the OCCAC as a Division III team.

Destiny Khay and Ziona Williams were the only players for Lakeland to score in double figures as both players had 12 points in the loss.

Lakeland struggled shooting the ball as the Lakers made just 27.3 percent from the field and 19 percent from the 3-point line. Lakeland made just 3-of-16 shots from the field in the first quarter and Owens jumped out to an 18-7 lead.

Shooting improved for the Lakers in the second quarter as Williams scored five points but Owens outscored Lakeland 22-12 to grab a 40-19 lead at the break.

The second half was much more even but Lakeland was unable to cut into the Owens lead. Both teams scored 25 points in the second half as Owens held on for the 21-point victory.

Lakeland will next play at home against Cuyahoga Community College on Wednesday, Feb. 13 at 5:30 p.m. Cuyahoga is 3-5 in OCCAC play.
