Lakeland squeezes out win over Cuyahoga, 65-60

KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland women's basketball struggled at time on offense but had enough to hold on for a 65-60 victory over Cuyahoga Community College Wednesday night.

Selah Richardson scored a season-high 27 points to help the Lakers improve to 17-7 overall and 9-2 in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference. Cuyahoga fell to 4-7 in the OCCAC.

Destiny Khay dropped in 12 points while Alicia Sephus came off the bench to score 10 points and grab 13 rebounds.

Lakeland came out a little sluggish in the opening quarter as Cuyahoga took a 20-16 lead after one. Khay scored eight points with a pair of 3-pointers but Lakeland trailed by four after one period.

The second quarter was much better for the Lakers as they made half of their shots from the field and outscored Cuyahoga 24-15. Richardson and Sephus each scored eight points as Lakeland grabbed a 40-35 lead at the half.

Lakeland shot just 27.3 percent from the field in the third quarter but was still able to outscore Cuyahoga 14-9. Richardson scored 10 of the team's 14 points and outscored Cuyahoga by herself as the Lakers grabbed a 54-44 heading into the fourth quarter.

Lakeland did not close out the game as well as they would have liked in making only 2-of-17 shots from the field. Cuyahoga outscored Lakeland 16-11 but the Lakers held on to the five-point victory.

Lakeland will hit the road on Saturday, Feb. 16 to face Clark State Community College for a game at 1 p.m. Clark State is 2-10 in OCCAC play.
