Lakeland coasts past Lorain County, 80-49

KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland women's basketball jumped out to an early lead and coasted to an 80-49 victory over Lorain County Community College Wednesday night to reach 20 wins.

Alicia Sephus came off the bench to lead Lakeland with 19 points and added eight rebounds to help Lakeland improve to 20-7 overall and 12-2 in Ohio Community College Athletic Conference play. Lorain County fell to 6-9 in OCCAC play.

Destiny Khay and Delesha Jackson each scored 14 points while Selah Richardson dropped in 12 points. Ziona Williams scored eight points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the win.

Khay got Lakeland going in the opening quarter with a pair of 3-pointers and finishing with eight points in the quarter to help the Lakers out to a 16-7 lead after one.

Sephus paced the offense in the second quarter with eight points and five rebounds as Lakeland outscored Lorain County 23-13 to extend its lead to 39-20 at the half.

Lorain County put together its best quarter in the third but it still wasn't enough to cut into the Lakeland lead. Williams scored six points and grabbed four rebounds to help the Lakers narrowly outscore Lorain County 19-16 to hold a 58-36 lead heading into the fourth.

Jackson scored eight and Sephus scored seven in the fourth as Lakeland extended its lead and cruised to the 31-point victory.

Lakeland will play its final home game of the regular season on Saturday. Feb. 23 against Edison State Community College at 1 p.m. Edison State is 10-4 in OCCAC play.
