Lakeland outlasts Edison State to reach District final, 71-66

CIRCLEVILLE, Ohio – Lakeland women's basketball outscored Edison State Community College by nine in the fourth quarter to pull out a 71-66 victory in the District I semifinals Thursday afternoon at Ohio Christian University.

With the win, Lakeland improves to 21-9 overall and earns a spot in the District I final against Sinclair Community College on Saturday, March 9 at noon.

Destiny Khay led the way for Lakeland with 18 points with the help of three 3-pointers while Ziona Williams and Delesha Jackson both scored 14. Selah Richardson also chipped in 12 points in the win.

Lakeland got off to a slow start as Edison State jumped out to a 15-11 lead after one quarter as the Lakers made just 4-of-15 in the first. Williams did score five in the first.

The second was much better for Lakeland as the Lakers got seven points from Richardson and outscored Edison State 23-14 to take a 34-29 into halftime.

The momentum went back to Edison State in the third as the Lakers were outscored 22-13 in the period. Khay did score five in the third but Lakeland shot just 5-of-18 and trailed 51-47 heading into the fourth.

Lakeland trailed by as much as nine in the fourth but stormed back, even with a couple players fouling out in the final period. Jackson scored seven for Lakeland in the fourth as the Lakers outscored Edison State 24-15 in the fourth.

Trailing by one with 1:21 left, Williams drilled a 3-pointer on the next Lakers possession to give Lakeland a 68-66 lead. From there, Lakeland never lost its lead and held on for the five-point victory.
