Lakers drop first conference match to No. 3 Owens, 3-0

KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland Community College was unable to get any momentum going and fell to No. 3 Owens Community College 3-0 by the score of 25-7, 25-12 and 25-11 Wednesday night.

The loss spoiled the home opener for the Lakers as they now fall to 3-5 overall and 3-1 in the Ohio Community College Athletic Conference.

Cary Morin, Iesha Niciu and Morgan Smart each had four kills for Lakeland while Caitlin Cipriano led with eight assists and Brittney O'Hara picked up 15 digs in the loss.

Lakeland and Owens started out pretty even but then Owens rattled off 10 straight points to take a 13-3 lead. After that, Lakeland was unable to pick up any of the momentum and dropped the first set 25-7.

The Lakers did play better in the second set and scored 12 points but again Owens was able to grab the second set 25-12 to take a 2-0 lead. Lakeland and Owens split the first 10 points in the third set but then it was Owens pulling away for the 25-11 victory to secure the sweep.

Lakeland will look to end its losing streak during the 2017 Shannon McBride Memorial Tournament in Kirtland. The Lakers will open on Friday, Sept. 8 with Oakland Community College at 2 p.m. and Community College of Beaver County at 6 p.m.
