Lakers drop final two matches of McBride Tournament

KIRTLAND, Ohio – Lakeland Community College volleyball fell flat in the final day of the 15th Annual Shannon Lee McBride tournament and lost its final two matches to Saint Clair County Community College and Potomac State College of West Virginia University Saturday afternoon.

The Lakers broke even in the tournament, finishing 2-2 with the pair of Saturday losses. Saint Clair won 3-1 by the score 25-18, 25-20, 23-25 and 25-19 while Potomac won 3-2 by the score 25-20, 17-25, 25-22, 17-25 and 18-16.

Lakeland's overall record drops to 5-7 with the pair of losses and its Ohio Community College Athletic Conference record stays at 3-1.

Saint Clair 3 – Lakeland 1

Lakeland made many uncharacteristic errors and those errors helped Saint Clair grab the first two sets as the Skippers closed out the Lakers in four, 3-1.

Cary Morin led the way for Lakeland with 17 kills while Krista Curtis added eight. Caitlin Cipriano dished out 20 assists while Brittney O'Hara earned 28 digs.

Lakeland started out in good shape and held a 15-13 lead in the opening set after a kill from Lauryn Mitchell.Saint Clair stormed back and only let the Lakers score three more points in the set to take the first 25-18.

Lakeland really couldn't get much momentum going in the second set and Saint Clair took a 2-0 set lead after a 25-20 victory. The Lakers showed more life in the third set, even after trailing 13-8 early on.

Curtis delivered a block to give Lakeland a 19-18 lead. The third would stay close the rest of the way but the Lakers found a way to force a fourth set with a 25-23 victory. Lakeland wouldn't be able to force a fifth set as the Lakers fell 25-19 in the fourth to drop the opening match of the day.

Potomac 3 – Lakeland 2

Lakeland and Potomac went back and forth winning sets in the first four and the fifth was extremely close but it was Potomac coming away with the 3-2 victory to finish off the day for Lakeland.

Curtis led Lakeland with 15 kills and Iesha Niciu added 13 in the loss. Cipriano added 20 assists and O'Hara earned 36 digs.

Lakeland will get back into conference play with a road trip on Wednesday, Sept. 13 to face Lorain County Community College at 6 p.m.
